Method - Stakeholder-led categorisation

Description

A method in which stakeholders themselves create categories to position (other) stakeholders.

Purpose

Create new categories to position stakeholders.

Guidance on performing this method

Stakeholder-led stakeholder categorization can be done in a brainstorm session or during interviews.

Strengths

A simple and fast way to categorize stakeholders. An advantage is that stakeholders themselves can recognize the categories created by themselves.

Weaknesses

As this is based on perceptions of the individual stakeholders, a drawback of this method is that respondents placed stakeholders in different categories, making categories less meaningful (Reed et al. 2009; Hermans, 2005).
